STUDENTS IN THE MOSCOW BALLET - December 26, 2009
On December 24, Dance Florida Academy's ten students walked in to the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts to rehearse with the Moscow Classical Ballet's The Nutcracker. The students, along with Ms. Cravey and Mr. Bucheck, were met by two Kravis liaisons and two interpreters. Shortly after being in their dressing room, the children were led upstairs for their rehearsal with the director, the two interpreters and the two dancers that would be helping them onstage
Hanging on every word, as directions were given in Russian, the children (with Ms. Cravey and Mr. Bucheck) listened to the translation. About 30 minutes later, the director said "thank you and good luck." A slight look of panic hit everyone's eyes as the children who were going to be mice, only ran through their section twice. The children in the first scene did get a run through -- at all.
After costume fittings, the curtain went up and the performance started. All ten students took to the stage like old pros! They looked like they been traveling with the company and performing their roles for months.
Everyone associated with the Moscow Classical Ballet was extremely nice and treated the children like gold. Most importantly, the students shared a very valuable experience as they performed with a professional dance company.
Congratulations to Dance Florida Academy Students in The Moscow Classical Ballet's production of The Nutcracker. They looked GREAT and did an incredible job as they spent three days of their Holiday Vacation -- on stage -- in front of thousands of people!

LAST PERFORMANCE OF LAND OF THE SWEETS - December 19, 2009

Thank you to all the parents who took an active part in bringing this production the the stage! A special thanks to Teresa Depoli and Ida Marie Bucheck for their tireless help backstage with costumes, hair and make-up! Mr. Hoff and Luca Depoli had the difficult and "heavy" job of unloading and laying the floor AND afterwards rolling it up, loading it and bringing it back to the studio -- to unload it again into the building.
PHOTOSHOOT
The photoshoot AFTER the performance went very smoothly. Even though it was a very long day, everyone was in a good mood and cooperated 250%! Ms. Cravey and Mr. Bucheck worked them hard. With Jared Jacoby (as Janine Harris' set-up and break-down assistant), Stylist Teresa Depoli and Wardrobe Coordinator Ida Marie Bucheck, all students looked beautiful as they participated at a very high and professional level. It looks like we have some great shots which will appear soon here on the website and in promotional materials.
CONGRATULATIONS
Mrs. Linder-Long (Jaquez's mother) won the drawing for the 11lb Turkey. It will add to their Holidays fun with some delicious eating! Thank you to Dance Florida Academy Accomapnist Olga Wescott for donating the turkey in order to raffle it off to help raise funds for all the good work that the Academy does!

FIRST WEEK IS DOWN - September 19, 2009
It was a busy day. Starting at nine the morning, all hands were on deck to greet parents and students for a day of Pre-Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop and Tap.
From five to eighteen, students filed in and out of their classes with excitement and anticipation. However it was sometimes difficult to tell who was more excited. Was it the parents? Was it the students? Maybe it was the teachers or Directors Ms. Cravey, Ms. Swiadon, Mr. Hoff and Mr. Bucheck?
For some students, it was their first day. For others, it was back in the studio after their first week of ballet for more work and movement of another sort. They all so very were focused and worked really hard!
Comments after classes, ranged from, "I think am going to be sore tomorrow but it was really fun," "...But I don't want to go home yet" -- to -- "Can I take that class too?"
Congratulations to staff teachers Burcin Gursel (Hip Hop), Traci-Anne Pearce (Jazz) and Kimberly Dawn Smith (Tap) for making the the first Saturday of a New Era -- a great one!

GREAT FIRST DAY - September 14, 2009
First thing at 8:30 this morning, we were greeted by Phoenix Landscape Maintenance -- ready to start the tree pruning in the parking lot. Until 2:00pm, they worked non-stop with chain saws, clippers, tractors and trucks. The lot no longer looks like Halloween or a Harry Potter movie set. Tomorrow they return to finish the mowing and final clean-up.
Phone calls from parents/guardians calls started directly at 9:00am. Some calls sounded panicked, worrying if it was too late to register and others needing to know where to buy dance wear.
The first morning adult class was taught by Mr. Hoff with Sasha Vagner at the grand! Some were old Academy of Ballet Florida students were present with some new. Even though we are a completely different organization, the former BF adult students were happy to know that we are honoring their class cards from that organization.
In the afternoon, as the children and teens started to filter in -- it got (good) crazy. By looking at all the smiling faces, everyone was so glad to see each other! There was a wonderful and positive excitement in the air.
Well, it was certainly wonderful to see the building full of happy and eager students
...And a GREAT first day!

IT'S ALL COOL - September 12, 2009
The crew from John C. Cassidy converged at the studio early this morning as the new main downstairs air conditioning unit was installed on the roof today and another repaired. Mr. Hoff installed the new lights in front of the building (as Mr. Bucheck held the ladder) in order to brighten things up at night.
The pianos were buffed as last minute finishing touches were handled by Ms. Swiadon and Ms Cravey. Thanks to Hartley Logsdon of Logsdon Plumbing for installing the water fountains. The soda machine should be stocked by Thursday. Students and families will notice containers of hand sanitizer all over the building for their safety.
Monday is the day!

LESS THAN FOUR DAYS – September 10, 2009
Today was the day to start the finishing touches before Opening Day on Monday September 14. Everyone was in the studios scrubbing, cleaning and arranging.
Roll books are ready. Adult Class Cards are printed and cut. Water fountains for the top of the stairs are going to be reinstalled and the upstairs lounge is now ready for students. The sound systems are hooked up for everything from Bach, Lady GaGa to "42nd Street."
Pianos are scheduled to be moved into the building late tomorrow morning. One of the new air conditioning units is being hoisted to the roof on Saturday and the parking lot landscape will be receiving a major pruning job first thing on Monday morning!
Was Cinderella ever this busy?
Luckily, there is still time to register early. This is highly recommended to avoid the lines and have a chance to sit down and talk to teachers -- either on Friday or tomorrow by noon. People planning to register on the day of their children's first classes should come in early to fill out the paper work and pay the proper fees and first month's tuition.

GETTING READY – September 3, 2009
Now that all inspections have are over and passed, the end of this week has been spent getting ready for student’s exciting first days of classes which begin on September 14. Mr. Hoff and Mr. Bucheck have carrying floors and sound equipment while Ms. Swiadon and Ms Cravey have been taping them. Many hours this week have been spent with City officials and local businessmen.
Taking time with families and students during registration has been fun and at times, educational. People have told us some unusual, interesting and sometimes funny things. For instance today, a grandparent of a new student told us she heard about us at her nail salon. Another little new student told us that she heard about us at Dunkin Donuts. Other youngsters say that have heard about Dance Florida Academy at their school or other dance schools.
Word is getting OUT!

REGISTRATION WEEK 2 - August 26
As students and their families come in, it has been nice to sit down and spend quality time with each one of them -- on an individual basis. They are extremely excited that Mrs. Hale, Ms. Cravey and Mr. Hoff are teaching their ballet classes. Great comfort has been expressed that Ms. Swiadon will be teaching their little ones, as well.
Besides the regular staff, Dance Florida Academy has added to the roster extraordinary Guest Teachers and Artists in Residence with more to join soon!

It was so nice to see the smiling faces of past students from former Academy of Ballet Florida who wanted to register and take classes with Dance Florida Academy. There were plenty of new faces too! Everyone seems committed and ready to go for another year.
Registration continues right up to the first days of classes.

THE CALLS KEEP COMING - August 12, 2009
Ever since the announcement went up on our Home Page and registration notices went out, the phones and web mail has been very busy.
Then, the first print ad appeared and everything went insane. As things have now worked out, Dance Florida Academy is incredibly fortunate to be able to have some office space and ALL FOUR STUDIOS in the former Ballet Florida Building until a more permanent home is found. Until then, Mrs. Hale, Ms. Cravey, Ms. Swiadon, Mr. Hoff and Mr. Bucheck have been cleaning and reorganizing like crazy to get ready for registration and opening days of classes!
Some things are changing. Somethings will remain the same. Unfortunately, the orange walls must stay. However, we have even created a comfortable, calm and quiet waiting room for parents/guardians. This will help keep patents/guardians out of the way of all the mayhem. Upper level students may also have a few very special surprises too.
REMEMBER: Registration starts the August 17 at 11AM!

IT'S GETTING CLOSE TO REGISTRATION TIME - August 6, 2009

Everyone -- including new students -- may start registration on the 17th. It is highly recommended to call for an appointment during registration time. If registering by mail, make sure to include Registration Fee AND at least, the first month's tuition.

OUR LOCATION - August 5, 2009
Dance Florida Academy is very fortunate and extremely excited to be able to temporarily lease some space in the former Ballet Florida Building at 500 Fern Street in West Palm Beach, Florida. This helps solve immediate issues such as proper flooring. By leasing this space right now, Dance Florida Academy has more time to secure a permanent home for our future!

DANCE LEGEND DIES - July 27, 2009
Dance great Merce Cunningham died in his sleep in New York. He was 90.
"You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls." Merce Cunningham

SUCH A QUICK RESPONSE - July 1, 2009
It’s just been a few days. The response to anewerabeginsnow.com’s announcement and traffic to this new website has been phenomenal. As the emails come in, we will get back to each individual question as soon as we possible.
Thank you to those who stated they are ready -- right now -- to commit their support with either cash donations and/or in-kind offers. As you know, we are presently wading through the process of filing for our non - profit status and such. When everything becomes finalized, donations will be tax deductible. We, of course, will be in touch. Knowing that kind of support is out there in our community is sincerely appreciated!

A NEW ERA BEGINS NOW! - June 28, 2009
As most already know, after 23 years, the Board of Directors has decided shut down operations and close the doors of Ballet Florida. For all of the dancers of the Company, staff, teachers, students of the Academy and volunteers, as well as, Palm Beach County, it is a very trying and to say the least, a sad time.
BRIEF COMPANY HISTORY
Founded and directed by Marie Hale and co-founded by Lynda Swiadon 23 years ago, Ballet Florida has brought to South Florida the finest dancers seen on the stages in area venues while performing works by world-renowned choreographers. Under Marie Hale's artistic direction, Ballet Florida has toured over half of the US and has been to Europe. In 2001 Ballet Florida became the only American dance company invited for a second time to perform at the prestigious International Dance Festival in Biarritz, France. This Palm Beach County dance company was one of the only companies in the US sanctioned to perform Mauricio Wainrot's powerful production Anne Frank -- performing it to general audiences AND to thousands upon thousands of school children in both Palm Beach and Broward Counties. The Company brought it's famous production of Cinderella to the DanceAspen Festival and Romeo and Juliet from coast to coast. It participated in Dance Chicago, a New York Festival celebrating Hispanic Culture and performed on the famous stage of The Joyce Theatre in New York City --only to name a few highlights.
BRIEF ACADEMY HISTORY
The Academy of Ballet Florida, was founded by Marie Hale and Lynda Swiadon over 35 years ago (as Ballet Arts). Then were later joined by and worked along side of Claudia Cravey and Steven Hoff. Over the years, this “team” has been part of the training of approximately 4,000 students. So many have gone on to professional careers in major dance companies, including but not only, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, American Ballet Theatre, Stuttgart Ballet, Frankfort Ballet, Houston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, The Joffery Ballet, Eddie Toussaint's Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Louisville Ballet, Les Ballet Trocadero de Monte Carlo and Paul Taylor Dance Company. Others have gone on to find wonderful and lasting careers in the theatre like musical theatre (on Broadway, National tours and dinner theatres), cruise lines, Vegas shows, theme parks, music videos, television, movies, as teachers and more.
Hundreds of other students have used their excellent training to acquire scholarships and awards in leading universities across the country. Mrs. Hale has even worked and trained with Olympic Medal winners. One former student is the ballet master of the Ballet de Monte Carlo and two former students went on to found and become artistic directors of their own companies -- one based in New York City and the other in Chicago.
...Over 200 years of combined real-life experience training students while producing and working with the world's finest dancers!
THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA
Several months ago, while meeting with business leaders throughout Palm Beach County, Ms. Hale, Ms. Cravey and Ms. Swiadon quietly set out to search the perfect location for a brand new school. From North Palm Beach to Lake Worth to Wellington, many buildings have been seen and revisited.
Trying to find a space large enough, appropriate, safe and comfortable, affordable, convenient and easily accessible, AND centrally located -- has been no easy task. Due to that, a location and opening date have not quite yet been decided.
So, as it stands right now, though un-named, with several great location possibilities -- and back to basics philosophy
…A much anticipated NEW school will be opening soon.*
Thank you to all of the dedicated parents, The City of West Palm Beach, The Downtown Development Authority, businesses and to the general public who have shown and given their support -- and offered it for our future!
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AND TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN!
